Why fire doors?

Fire doors are legally required in certain areas to prevent fires from spreading throughout a building and provide clear access to escape. Installation of fire doors are regulated by AS1905.1.

Maintenance of fire doors is regulated by AS1805-21.

Is it a fire door?

Sometimes it can be difficult to determine if a door is fire rated or a fire exit (non-rated door). If the door is set in a metal frame and has a compliance tag on the hinge side of the door, it is a fire door. If you have concerns over whether a door should be a fire door or not, please call our office and we can advise you on the next steps.

A fire door set consists of metal door frame, fire door & fire rated hardware.

Unit entry fire doors

Most unit entry doors are fire doors in buildings over 3 stories. Unit entry fire doors require a compliant fire-rated lockset, closer, door stop & hinges. These items must be in good working order to be compliant. A fire door must be able to self-close & self-latch to be compliant.

Does my fire door contain asbestos?

All fire door manufactured after 1985 are more than likely asbestos free. If a building was built prior to 1985, the fire doors maybe asbestos filled fire doors. When we replace these doors, we are unable to re-use any hardware and the door must be disposed of according to regulations. Scanline Fire Doors use specialist asbestos contractors to dispose of asbestos filled fire doors.

Where do I store fire door certificates & rectification reports?

Keep your records of fire door certificates & rectification reports in your buildings’ logbook. It is the responsibility of the building owner/manager to maintain records.
